Google urges IE6 lusers to get a Browser

Friday, January 2nd, 2009 by Marko Zabreznik

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 was released on August 27, 2001, shortly after Windows XP was finished. Now, 8 years later, both are outdated but still used by a multitude of users. That of course is little concern to the average joe, but it makes web developers everywhere want to kick the bucket sad.

But uncle Google is finally taking a firm stand against the evil overlord with taking IE6 out of the list of supported browsers for Gmail and showing users of the mentioned browser messages to upgrade to ither Chrome or Firefox. That same message was shown weeks ago to IE7 users, but later removed.

Here is hoping the browser wars will get interesting again. The standard is ready to boom out of proportion with more and more features being added by different engines regulary. But will the users follow, or stay with their captive untill they are finally left out in the dry ?

I for one, have found no browser that I liked better then IE6. It’s got a small footprint (memory/cpu) because it’s not trying to be an application provider.. it’s trying to be a browser. The browser interface components are small and out of the way. This maintains the focus on the content, not the browser. When I find a browser that I like better, I’ll move. So far, I have not. Less is more. Back to the basics, folks. A capable graphical browser with a small foot print with the focus on content. Browsers should not have self ego love.

DOliva, you really should try Google’s Chrome. The interface is almost non-existent, its one of the fastest out there and it will let you see pages the way they are intended. Believe me, you are missing out on a lot ;)

I am quite limited to certain browsers do to my line of work, so I must partly agree with you, it sometimes gets really bloated ;(

Cheers.

Chrome might be an option if they port it to Win2k.
